Project summary: The Spirorchiidae is a family of highly pathogenic turtle blood flukes which cause considerable disease and mortality world-wide. Despite their importance in turtle health and conservation, little is known about spirorchiid life cycles, biodiversity, and connectivity of geographically distant populations. This project will elucidate spirorchiid life cycles from Western Australia, and use genetic data to determine if there are regional distinctions between the spirorchiid fauna present at Ningaloo and southeast Queensland.
